Peach Blossom in BaZi: What the Classic Actually Says

Peach Blossom is the most searched star in BaZi, and almost every explanation of it says the same thing. It is the romance star. It makes you attractive. In a Peach Blossom year, someone arrives.

Here is the plain answer first. Peach Blossom 桃花 is found from your year or day branch, and it always falls on one of four branches, 子, 午, 卯 or 酉. That part is settled. What is not settled is almost everything said about it afterwards. The oldest text we can check line by line, 《三命通會》, has no chapter called Peach Blossom at all. It files the star under a different name, it calls it a Ruining Spirit, and it does not call it lucky.

That does not make the modern reading wrong. It makes it modern. The difference is worth knowing, because nearly every page on this star cites a classic that does not say what the page says.

How Peach Blossom is found

The twelve earthly branches fall into four groups of three, called trines. Each trine has one Peach Blossom branch.

You carry the star if that branch appears in another of your four pillars. If you are new to the branches, the twelve earthly branches sets them out.

One real disagreement lives here, and it is worth saying plainly. Some practitioners cast Peach Blossom from the year branch, some from the day branch, and many check both. The defining passage in 《三命通會》 gives the four pairings but does not say which branch to start from. Our engine casts from both, because both are in live use, and shows you where the star lands.

What the classic says

The section that defines the star is called 論咸池, On Xian Chi, the Pool of Xian. 咸池 is where an older text says the sun sets, and so the classic names it after dusk, the hour when things grow dim. It is the Bathing position 沐浴 of each element's cycle, the second stage after birth. Peach Blossom is not the title. It is an alternate name, supplied inside the defining sentence.

Then the text gives its judgement, and it is not gentle. It calls the star 敗神, the Ruining Spirit, and 桃花煞, Peach Blossom Sha. It describes its nature as 「奸邪淫鄙」, devious, licentious and base. And it rules on what the star does in a chart.

「此人入命，有破無成，非為吉兆，婦人尤忌之。」

When it enters a chart there is breaking and no completing. It is not an auspicious sign. And the text warns a woman's chart against it above all.

We report that last clause because it is in the text, not because we agree with it. A rule that judges the same star more harshly in a woman's chart than a man's is a rule about its century, and The Eight does not read it that way.

What matters for anyone searching this star is simpler. The classic most often cited for Peach Blossom as romance luck is a text that calls it a Ruining Spirit. Modern practice reads it as charm, attention and the pull of attraction. That is a reasonable reading of a Bathing position, a place where things are unguarded and on show. But it is later practice, and it should be called that.

The inner and outer wall

The most repeated rule about Peach Blossom is that it has two kinds. Inside the wall 墙内桃花, it is attraction kept within a marriage. Outside the wall 墙外桃花, it spills into open view, and the pages that teach it usually mention affairs.

That split does not appear in 論咸池. It is later practice. And the pages that teach it do not agree with each other.

Across the English-language pages we read for this piece, we found four different versions. One puts the inner wall in the year and day pillars. Another puts it in the year and month pillars. A third names only the hour as outside. A fourth splits by which branch the star was cast from, not where it lands. Two of those pages cite 《三命通會》 by name for rules that contradict each other. Chinese-language practice argues the same point in the open, especially over whether the day pillar counts as inside or outside.

We have to be candid about our own part in this. Until September 2026 our paid chapter on the named stars also credited 《三命通會》 with the inner and outer split. Once we checked the text line by line, we removed it. The split may be useful practice. It is not the classic, and a rule that four teachers state four ways is not one we will hand you as settled.

Peach Blossom years

A year brings your Peach Blossom when the year's own branch is your Peach Blossom branch. That gives a rule anyone can check.

2026 is a 丙午 year. 午 is the Peach Blossom branch for the 巳, 酉 and 丑 trine, so 2026 carried it for charts whose year or day branch is one of those three. It was not a Peach Blossom year for everyone, whatever the horoscopes said.

2027 is a 丁未 year, and 未 is not one of the four Peach Blossom branches. By the classical rule, 2027 is not a Peach Blossom year for any chart. If you read that it is, the writer is using a different rule, perhaps one of the other romance stars, and should say which. The Year of the Fire Goat covers what the 丁未 year does carry.

What it can and cannot tell you

A Peach Blossom in a chart names a quality of attention. People who carry it often recognise the feeling. Rooms notice them before they have spoken, sometimes more than they asked for, and they have had to learn what to let in and what to wave past.

That is recognition, and it is where the star is useful. It is not a forecast. A Peach Blossom does not tell you a partner is coming, that you will stray, or that anyone else will. It does not describe a spouse. The pages that read it as a warning about affairs are, in a sense, closer to the classic than the pages that read it as good luck, and both are claiming more than a single star can carry.
