Almost every page on the Void opens with fear. It is called Death and Emptiness. It empties whatever it touches. If it falls on your marriage pillar, the marriage will not hold. And the question underneath every search is the same: is it bad, and how do I fix it?

Here is the plain answer first. The Void 空亡 is the pair of branches left without a stem in your day pillar's ten-day cycle. It is arithmetic, not a curse. It appears somewhere in about four charts in ten. And the oldest text we can check line by line, 《三命通會》, says in so many words that it must not be judged simply as bad.

That does not make the Void meaningless. It means it is a different thing from what it is sold as.

Why two branches are always left over

A BaZi calendar pairs ten heavenly stems with twelve earthly branches, one of each per day, in a cycle of sixty. Ten does not go into twelve. So every run of ten days, starting on a 甲 day, uses all ten stems and only ten of the twelve branches. Two branches are left with no stem to stand on. Those two are the Void of that ten-day run, called a 旬.

A pillar in your chart sits in the Void when its branch is one of your two. If the branches are new to you, the twelve earthly branches sets them out.

The classic states the mechanism itself, in a line older than the rhyme most pages quote. The ten stems run out at 酉, 「所以無戌亥」, and so there is no 戌 and no 亥. The name follows. A place with no stem is empty, 空, and a branch with no stem is lost, 亡. The popular jingle, 甲子旬中戌亥空, does not appear in the chapter at all. It is a later memory aid.

Two things the arithmetic already tells you

Your day branch can never be void. When the Void is cast from the day pillar, the day's own branch is paired with its own stem inside its own cycle, so it is never one of the two left over. We checked 60,000 random birth moments with our engine and found no exceptions. This matters, because a common reading casts the Void from the day and then warns that the spouse palace, which is the day branch, is empty. That reading has contradicted its own method.

The Void is common. In the same 60,000 charts, 42 per cent carried at least one branch in the Void, and about one in six had it on the year pillar. A feature that sits in four charts in ten is not a rare misfortune. It is a texture that many people carry, and it deserves to be read as one.

What the classic says

The chapter is 論空亡, On the Void, in 卷三 of 《三命通會》. We read it in the Siku Quanshu edition. It opens with the derivation above and then, before anything else, gives its judgement.

「然空而有實，亡而有存，所以未可便爲凶論。」

Yet what is empty still holds something real, and what is lost still remains. So it must not be judged simply as bad.

Three rulings follow, and each one runs against the popular reading.

Which pillar. The text says the Void from the birth day's cycle is the one that presses hardest, 「見生日旬中空亡極緊」. It brings in the year only when year and day void each other, which it judges worse. So the day-pillar method is the classical one, and the year enters as a special case.

Good or bad depends on what is emptied. Where a chart holds something harmful, the text says the Void is exactly what relieves it. Where a chart holds something favourable, its wealth, its standing, the Void thins it. And a combination with the void branch cancels the emptiness in both cases. So the same Void can be the best thing in one chart and the thinnest place in another, and no page can tell you which without reading the whole chart.

Three pillars empty is no curse. 「月日時三位俱空亡者，不害爲大貴人」. A chart with the month, day and hour all in the Void is no bar to great standing. Notice that this line needs the day pillar in the Void, which cannot happen when the Void is cast from the day. So even the classic reckoned it more than one way. That is worth knowing when a page tells you there is one correct method.

The chapter also has a line most readers will recognise. 「金空則響，火空則明，水空則清」. Hollow metal rings, hollow fire burns bright, hollow water runs clear. A hollow bell is the one that sounds. The text is not only saying the Void can be survived. It is saying that some things are better for being empty.

Filling the Void, and other later rules

The most repeated modern rule is that the Void can be filled, 填實. When a year or luck pillar brings the void branch itself, the empty place is said to fill and whatever it holds finally arrives. A second rule says a clash can shake a void branch loose.

The term 填實 does not occur in 論空亡. The chapter does say that a clash in the luck cycle turns the Void, 「若運衝刑，反爲虚煞」, and that a scholar who meets it gains a name. But the specific idea of a year arriving to fill the empty branch is later practice. It may well be useful practice. It is not the classic.

We are candid about our own part in this. Inside our engine, the reading of your life's turning years does use exactly those two later rules, filling and clashing, to decide when your Void has been reached. We use them because they are what practitioners actually read, and we record them as later practice rather than as the text. The pages that quote 《三命通會》 for a filling rule, or for the line that a clash makes the Void real, are quoting words we could not find in its chapter on the Void.

A few other errors are worth naming, because they are easy to check. Some pages find the Void from the day stem alone, but the stem does not decide it, the whole day pillar does. 甲子 and 甲戌 share a stem and have different void pairs. Some Russian-language pages describe a void branch as one with no hidden stems, which confuses two separate ideas. A void branch keeps its hidden stems. What it lacks is a heavenly stem in that cycle.

The Void in the year ahead

A year reaches your Void when its branch is one of your two. That makes a rule anyone can check.

The month that begins at 寒露 on 8 October 2026 is a 戊戌 month. 戌 is void for anyone born on a day from 甲子 to 癸酉.

2027 is a 丁未 year. 未 is void for anyone born on a day from 甲申 to 癸巳, one day pillar in six. For everyone else, 2027 does not touch the Void at all. The Year of the Fire Goat covers what the 丁未 year does carry.

What it can and cannot tell you

People with a pillar in the Void often recognise the feeling it names. Something in that part of life is present and does not quite hold. The role that looked solid and never gave them footing. The plan that was real on paper and hollow in the hand. Sometimes the opposite, a pressure that should have landed and simply passed through them.

That is recognition, and it is where the Void is useful. It is not a forecast. A void year pillar does not mean your family abandons you. A void hour pillar does not mean you will have no children. The Void names where something is thin in your chart, and the classic itself insists that thin is sometimes exactly what a chart needs. How the Void sits among the rest of your chart, its combinations and clashes and its named stars, decides far more than the Void alone.
